Themes

The scriptures teach, “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.” (2 Corinthians 13:1) While a passing mention in a single hymn might be easily overlooked, a theme that occurs multiple times can start to be more salient in our subconscious thinking.

Our experience in church is a culmination of individual events. It could as well be themes that are omitted as much as those included. For example, it makes sense to male songs to sing about missionary work. That is someone that is given to everyone, including men. However, if there aren’t also songs about women doing missionary work, it sends a message that missionary work is a male-only task. To fully understand the effect of a hymn on Church culture, we have to look at the larger context.
